[Mac-telephony-list] Practical use for a non-techie

I'm not a telephony expert, just an architect with a good all-round
knowledge of computers (and of the MacOS).
Is there any practical use for a person like me today, telephony-
wise? Or is this field only reserved for those who spend their whole
active life developing what the average people will be using in a few
years?
I would love to have a practical (VoIP) phone system based on my old
B/W G3 desktop sitting in my cupboard doing nothing. Specifically, I
would love to do the following:
• make and answer phone calls at home/office through my Mac and other
computers in my wLan;
• record conversations for archival purposes (letting the other party
know that this is happening, of course);
• play Music on Hold;
• transfer lines to another Mac/Win on the wLan, or even to another
real phone in the home/office.
Is any of the above in the sphere of realism for an average person?
Many thanks,
Alex.
