Using a SIP-based phone/softphone when connecting to a remote, NATed
Asterisk system requires the use of a STUN server if the softphone doesn't
has one setup to use by default (X-Lite). A good info page is here:
http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk+SIP+NAT+solutions
I agree that using an IAX-based setup is easier, which requires only UDP
port 4569 to be forwarded to Asterisk to work. And, JackenIAX,
http://www.jackenhack.com/jackeniax/ is by far the simplest and nicest
softphone on the Mac.
I good IAX info page is here:
http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-IAX
BTW, my Asterisk system is NATed and remote access works fine for both SIP
and IAX clients. So, IMHO, I see no need to place the Asterisk system at the
network edge. Just my 2 cents.
